 Teaching update: I learned everyone's names today!

HERBS & HONEY - an instragrammable cafe near Vartanants Square

The lamps here in Gyumri are quite artistic!

Look at the tulip shape lamp!

Linden, wild strawberry, calendula, chamomile tea - primarily chamomile/flower flavor without honey, more strawberry flavor with honey


Jingalov hats - flatbread filled with a variety of greens. I could smell chives, not sure what else. Served with yogurt. I would have liked more oil in the greens.

From the outside, we could hear music and see dancing so weren't sure if there was a private party. Turns out they just played music for ordinary guests, probably because it was a Friday night. After observing a bit, we joined in on the dancing and the ladies were very kind and taught us some Armenian dance moves.

I thought that my career of teaching internationally would end together with undergrad, but I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to teach for a week in Mexico. This was a week full of teaching, connecting with students and fellow instructors, and exploring the city. There's no better way to understand a place than to have local guides and connect with the people who live there. JULY 25 I got to know Terminal 2 of MEX airport pretty well, including the many Le Pain Quotidien storefronts. I tried one of the pillowy soft vanilla conchas - with lots of butter and sugar to keep it from being dry. After a red-eye and a 6 hour layover in Mexico City, I finally arrived in Guanajuato. WI + MN - Devil's Lake and Twin Cities (June 19 - 23, 2026)

Since moving to Chicago, one of my goals has been to explore the Midwest. On this trip, I discovered the beauty of Wisconsin in Devil's Lake State Park and of Minnesota in the Twin Cities. Paige and I at Minnehaha Falls! DAY 1 (WI) As we drove into Wisconsin on I-90, the landscape began to shift. The straight and flat road morphed into a few rolling hills, complete with some twists and turns - reminding me of family road trips through upstate New York or Pennsylvania. Lesson #1: not all of the Midwest is completely flat! We made a quick dinner stop at Culver's which is my new favorite fast food chain. Previously, I had tried their flavorful, fresh never frozen burgers. This time, I tried one of their ice creams courtesy of a free ice cream coupon that my roommate left in the kitchen drawer. BPS 2025 - LA + SF (Feb 15-22, 2025)

I took a trip to LA for the BPS conference and made a short visit to SF / Berkeley as well. I enjoyed the warmth, sunshine, greenery, lemon trees – plus all the good food! DAY 1 (2/15) – Little Tokyo, West Hollywood, Waymos, food delivery carts (Sloane) House-made udon noodles in uni cream sauce at Marugame Monzo First time having Japanese style mochi from a confectionary! So much better than supermarket stuff We had dinner in West Hollywood with other members of the Bphys program. It was a very California experience - riding in a Tesla for the first time, spotting Waymos and food delivery robots, and walking into a super overpriced grocery store with meh products and Wolfgang Puck's name on the sign.
